If you dive within the light zone of a cave, the area near the cave entrance where natural light is always visible, you’re cavern diving.
The light zone is the area near the entrance of the cave where you can see natural light at all times.
If you want to explore secrets hidden in caverns around the world you’ll want to get your PADI Cavern Diver Speciality Certification.
During this course you’ll learn to use equipment and procedures that allow you to explore such areas safely.
This is a challenging and very exciting course that includes four training dives over at least two days.
What will I Learn during the PADI Cavern Diver Specialty Course?
You’ll go on four dives during the PADI Cavern Dive programme. During your first dive (which is conducted in open water and not in a cavern), you’ll practice the use of lines and reels and emergency procedures.
The final three dives are conducted in the cavern environment. Your actual penetration-training dives are limited to within the light zone and within 40 metres from the surface (vertical and horizontal distance included).
The programme covers the knowledge and techniques of cavern diving and describes the dangers involved with cave diving (this is not a cave diving course).
Topics covered in the course include:
Cavern navigation and line protocols
Depth and distant limits for cavern diving
Planning, organization, techniques, problems and hazards of cavern diving
Special equipment use, such as lights, guidelines, reels and redundant breathing systems
Air sharing, disorientation, silting, line problems and other emergency procedures specific to cavern diving
Proper body position and buoyancy control, and air-consumption management
Silt prevention, buoyancy control, air management and emergency procedures
Line entanglement and breakage, disorientation from permanent lines and emergency situations unique to cavern diving
Who can participate in the PADI Cavern Diver Specialty Course?
If you’re aged 18+ and have already completed the PADI Advanced Course (or equivalent), in general good health and fitness, and are not suffering from a cold or ear infection, you should be eligible to become a certified PADI Cavern Diver.
